The Most Familiar African Mammals
The african mammals with which most holidaymakers will be familiar is that of the white man and the white woman in Africa. From Conrad's Heart of Darkness, it has been the experience, or perhaps the conceit, of white people that Africa has a particular, vibrant meaning for them. I make this point because the books I am about to recommend are by no means a complete survey. Geographically the literature of Africa can be divided into three parts: East Africa, West Africa and Southern Africa. I have excluded Mediterranean Africa, although I recommend Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria Quartet and Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo Trilogy.
