Materials Used In Oriental Rugs

The glossy wool of sheep is the most commonly used in making Oriental rugs. Other than that goat’s hair, camel’s hair, silk and cotton are also employed. Kurdistan, a place where the western part of Persia borders Turkey, is believed to produce the finest wool in the world. The wool obtained from the region of Khorasan and Kirman is fine and velvety whereas the wool got from Caucasus and Central Asia is strong and lustrous. Sheep’s wool continues to be the first choice but cotton and silk also have been used quite often. The wondrous sheen of the Oriental rugs is obtained from the materials used.
