Kohler’s disease a Problem in the Navicular Bone in Children
The most common problem of the navicular bone of the foot in children around the ages of 3-5 years is what we called the Kohlers disease. This condition is usually caused by a temporary block in the circulation to the bone. What happens is that the bone softens and gets compressed. It gets compressed as the navicular bone is a prime weightbearing bone in the top part of the arch of the foot. In this condition typically the child presents with a progressive pain in the midfoot and a limp. The child will need to be put into supportive shoes and maybe into a plaster cast to treat this. If it is not treated quickly, a permanent deformity can result.
